Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM)
FDM works by extruding heated, semi-liquid thermoplastics one layer at a time. Midwest Composite Technologies has three Stratasys Fortus 900mc systems, five Stratasys Fortus 400mc systems, and one Stratasys Fortus 360mc system for making FDM parts. The Fortus 900mc, Fortus 400mc and Fortus 360mc extrude both modeling material and support material. After the part is completed the support material can be broken off or washed away with detergent and water.

Part tolerances distinguish the Fortus series from other 3D systems. Fortus systems are designed and manufactured for the highest accuracy and repeatability. Parts made in the Fortus 900mc are produced within an accuracy of +/-.0035 inch or +/-.0015 inch per inch, whichever is greater. The Fortus 400mc has an accuracy of +/-.005 or +/-.0015 inch per inch, whichever is greater.

One advantage of Fortus systems is the wide variety of thermoplastics available as modeling materials. You can choose standard, engineering grade, or high performance thermoplastic. Materials can be chosen for high heat and chemical resistance, translucence, biocompatibility, etc. Click on the materials listed below to find out more about them.
